Leelu's travel arrangements finalized

Oh the irony of it all. When we first came over to the US we used KLM Air Cargo to transport Piglett and Eeyore from Johannesburg to Seattle. Anyway after many conversations with Air France we will not be using them and will be using KLM. The advantage of this is that Leelu will now be on a separate flight than Griselda and can leave at a different time.

I am currently waiting for some pricing from KLM to see if it is better to just buy the dog carrier from them in South Africa or to send one across with Griselda.

Travel arrangement for Leelu – Part III

The transportation requirements from the KLM website are as follows:

Be sure to arrange vaccinations, travel documents and other important matters well in advance. Contact the local embassy of your destination country for precise requirements.

Remember that some countries have strict quarantine regulations. (KLM is registered with the UK’s Pet Travel Scheme. Contact KLM Cargo for details.)
Secure a label to the side of the kennel stating the animal’s name and feeding instructions.

- Allow five days for your pet to get used to its kennel before the flight.
- Do not allow your pet to drink for four hours before departure.
- Do not feed your pet for 12 hours before departure.

We strongly advise you not to tranquillize your pet. It will take longer to get accustomed to its new surroundings and its temperature may drop during the flight.

Below is our Pet Checklist, which must be completed by a KLM agent at check-in. Please make sure you can meet all its requirements.

Travel arrangements for Leelu

Importing a dog into the US takes a lot of hard work and co-ordination. Fortunately we have been through this process once already when we brought Piglett and Eeyore over with us when we first came to the United States.

In part due to some of the medical issues that we have had with Eeyore when he was a puppy it was very important to me that we get our next Bull Terrier from a reputable breeder who had the animals best interests at heart. In this regard we were exceptionally fortunate to make the acquaintance of Rita and Martin La Cock who are both very active in the Bull Terrier community.

I have attached some of our correspondence (addresses masked for privacy) so that you can see what a fantastic experience we have had so far.

I emailed the South African Bull Terrier Club in March to ask for a recommendations for an ethical breeder who would be able to help us with obtaining a dog in the September/ October 2007 time frame. Griselda and I ended up being so impressed with Rita (the club secretary) that we immediately joined the club.

We received the fantastic news that Leelu had been born! We were getting worried that we would be able to get a puppy that would meet the 3 month minimum age limit when Gris was in South Africa this September.

We wanted to fly either KLM or Air France (now merged) as they have the best live animal transport facilities. Fortunately for us we managed to get Air France. Griselda will be arriving in South Africa on 19th September and returning to Seattle on the 15th of October with Leelu.

However we still have the following important steps need to take place:

Process checklist for Benjamin and Griselda
1. Book Griselda’s tickets (SEA to JNB, JNB to SEA)
2. Book Leelu’s ticket (JNB to SEA)
3. Purchase airline approved carrier for Leelu
4. Fly to SA :-)
5. Meet Martin and Rita
6. Pay for Leelu
7. Arrange veterinary paperwork
8. Fly back to Seattle
9. Home quarantine under vet’s supervision for one month.

Process checklist for Rita and Martin
1. Dog vaccinations and vet checkups
2. Weight and height measurements so we can obtain the correct size crate for her flight.

Documentation checklists.
- Dog quarantine notice.
- APHIS dog importation rules
- CDC dog importation rules

And we pronounce thee Leelu

After much deliberation we have finally decided that we will be calling our new baby LeeLu. Of course her full "formal" name will still be "Pegradine Country Angel", but around the house we will call her LeeLu (pronounced Lee – loo)

The next step in the process is we want to get hold of our breeder in South Africa and ask if they can start calling her by that name so that she is used to it.
